Scientists Cite Buses As Greenest Form Of Travel

The Union of Concerned Scientists, an activist group known for its environmental advocacy on fighting climate change, just released a report titled “Getting There Greener: The Guide To Your Lower Carbon Vacationin which they concluded consumers should go by bus to go green. “A couple traveling on a motorcoach will generate nearly 50 percent less global warming pollution than they would by driving a hybrid car,” according to the study. “ABA could not have said it better,” said President and CEO Peter Pantuso. “For the last couple of years, the motor-coach, tour and travel industry has been telling lawmakers and the press about how we're the hassle-free and green alternative. And now, others are not only listening, but responding positively – issuing academic studies and scientific reports saying exactly that.” The UCS report comes on the heels of the updated DePaul University study revealing a surge in intercity bus travel over the past year. And ABA, through its robust Foundation research activities, just recently released an updated study from MJ Bradley & Associates comparing emissions among 14 different transportation modes, showing once again that motorcoaches are the greenest – achieving 206.6 passenger miles per gallon.

Now the academic and scientific communities have begun to carry the message about our green credentials – both to policy-makers and the media,” Pantuso added. “Other industries rely on advertising and unsound research to tell their stories. All of us should be proud to be part of a community where university professors and environmental scientists have corroborated what we've been saying for so long. Our great story is even greater when respected independent third parties are telling it exactly as we've been communicating all along.”
